SENATOR DAMON THAYER, UNOPPOSED, WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE AS SENATE MAJORITY FLOOR LEADER
FRANKFORT, KY (November 15, 2022) — Senator Damon Thayer (R-Georgetown), the longest serving Republican Senate Majority Floor Leader in state history, has been re-elected to the role by acclimation after being unchallenged by any of his Senate colleagues. Previous Republican Majority Floor leaders include former Senator Dan Kelly and current Senate President Robert Stivers.
This decision comes exactly one week after Kentucky voters went to the polls and voted to increase the size of the Republican Senate majority to a historic 31 members. The minority Democratic caucus currently sits at seven members, but will be six upon the vacancy that will be left by departing Senate Minority Leader Morgan McGarvey.
“I’m honored and privileged to be selected to continue serving as Senate Majority Floor Leader,” Thayer said. “I serve alongside a group of exceptional people and look forward to not only directing activity on the chamber floor, but in also advancing a conservative agenda that benefits all Kentuckians.”
As Senate Majority Floor Leader, Thayer guides daily legislative activity on the Senate Floor to ensure a smooth process, overseeing the passage of all legislation and resolutions.
Thayer represents District 17, which encompasses Scott and Grant counties, and part of Kenton and Fayette counties. He was first elected to the Senate in 2003, nearly twenty years ago, and as of January 1, will have served as floor leader for ten of those years.
