The 2022 Legislative Session of the Kentucky General Assembly concluded on Thursday, April 14. Included in this year's road plan was funding for significant projects in Kenton County. Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer (R-Georgetown) and Senate Budget Chair Chris McDaniel (R-Ryland Heights) played instrumental roles in securing funding for these vital projects.
Last week marked the official end of the 2022 Regular Session. We concluded the final two legislative days on Wednesday and Thursday for the General Assembly to override Governor Andy Beshear's vetoes. In what could be the most active veto override effort in Kentucky history, eight Senate bill vetoes and over 20 state House of Representative bill vetoes were overridden, bypassing the Governor's attempt to block legislation. In addition to these overrides, we passed a few additional bills, and I expect those bills will be signed into law.
The session has now entered the veto recess period with the conclusion of week 13 of the 2022 Kentucky General Assembly. Lawmakers worked late to ensure critical legislation was sent to the governor ahead of the veto period. The House and Senate passed over 100 bills this week.
The final day of the 2022 Regular Session of the Kentucky General Assembly is on the horizon, which means legislative activity is taking place at a rapid pace. We are required by the constitution to be finished by April 14. Week 12 of this year’s session included busy committee agendas and important legislation making final passage through the legislative process.
Week 11 of the 2022 regular session was unique in that the General Assembly gaveled in for a historic day of session at the Old State Capitol. If you have never toured it, I highly recommend you go. The Old Kentucky State Capitol was the third statehouse, built in 1830 following devastating fires in the previous two. It was designed by native architect Gideon Shryock in the classical Greek Revival style, modeled after the Temple of Minerva and used until 1910 when the current Capitol was built. It is a beautiful building, steeped in history and rich with artifacts of days gone by.
